NUTP: Install CCTV for security, not to monitor teachers
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 28 -- The National Union of the Teaching Profession said yesterday the installation of closed-circuit television cameras in schools was a security measure and not for the purpose of monitoring teachers. NUTP secretary-general Harry Tan Huat Hock said the Education Ministry must act to ensure that the installation of CCTV cameras in schools was purely for security purposes. He was commenting on the complaints from teachers of Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Penchala here that the school administration had installed CCTV cameras in the teachers' room.
The installation of CCTV cameras in the teachers' room would only jeopardise the privacy of the teachers and cause issues related to sensitivities, he said in a statement.
The NUTP had recently proposed the installation of CCTVs in public areas, and not in places where they can jeopardise the privacy of teachers and students, to monitor crime and ensure security.
Subsequently, Deputy Education Minister Datuk P, Kamalanathan reportedly said that the ministry was identifying high-risk schools where the CCTV cameras could be installed to monitor crime and ensure security. -- Bernama
