Gunmen kill security guard in Lira
A security guard attached to Cooperate Security Services, a private security firm, has been shot dead in Lira town by unknown gunmen. James Ongora, 33, was shot dead on Monday morning at corner Kamdini, Teso-bar in Adyel Division, where he was deployed to guard Fortebet, a sports betting company. The gunmen suspected to be armed robbers reportedly exchanged fire with the security guard before shooting him with four bullets.
The assailants later broke into the counter and took away with Shs3.3 million, the North Kyoga regional police spokesperson, Mr David Ongom Mudong, has confirmed. He said the police are holding three suspects at Lira Central Police Station in connection to incident. "The suspected armed robbers who are still at large attacked Forbet at around 4am this morning and started firing bullets at the security guard," he told Daily Monitor.
"Unfortunately the gunmen showered him with four bullets and killed him before entering the house and took off with Shs3.3 million, which was in the counter." He said the gunmen did not pick the security guard's gun. "I think their main motive was to carry out robbery, since they did not go away with the gun," he said. The LC3 chairman of Adyel Division, Mr Jimmy Awany, urged the business community to avoid operating at night.
"All business premises like bars, supermarkets and sports betting should close by 10pm as it is very risky to operate up to very late at night or opening very early in the morning," Mr Awany cautioned.
