Give police access to unclaimed cars left at ports, says security expert

Security expert Robert Finzi-Smith has suggested that a system is put in place to allow the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) to have access to some of the unclaimed vehicles left at the island’s ports. Finzi-Smith argues that this will save the government money to buy cars for the police while at the same time boosting the mobility of the constabulary. He was speaking last Thursday at a Gleaner Editor’s stakeholder forum to mark the second anniversary of the Andrew Holness-led Administration.

Vehicle shortage has been an ongoing challenge for the JCF.

Dozens of motor vehicles are abandoned at ports each year by Jamaicans, many of whom are unable to pay import dues to clear them.

These vehicles are usually auctioned by Jamaica Customs to recover costs to store them.
