PM promises police service transformation law, new national security act this year

Prime Minister Andrew Holness says the government will be tabling this year, legislation that will define the transformation of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF). According to Prime Minister Holness, the transformation of the JCF is necessary if it is to effectively fight crime, especially in light of the record levels of crime affecting the country. Over 1,560 persons were killed last year.

In his New Year’s message, Holness said this new legislation would replace the current JCF Act and focus, among other things, on preserving the integrity of the men and women who serve. He says the legislation will also ensure that corruption in the ranks of the police services does not compromise the ability of the force to fight crime. The prime minister says the government intends to also pass the MOCA Act and table the National Security Act, which will create a more coordinated framework for all agencies operating within the national security space.
