Metrorail to deploy more police, security to trains due to rampant cable theft

CAPE TOWN – Metrorail[1] says it will deploy more police and security officers to its trains.

Last week commuters were left stranded when suspects stole copper cable in Kuilsriver[2], which crippled the northern line.At the weekend, the rail agency had to suspend the central line due to vandalism and cable theft.Regional Manager Richard Walker says they’re having a zero-tolerance approach to the suspects.“[They are] Attacking our signal equipment in the main, our track boxes as well as our apparatus cases which is critical equipment to operate the train service safely in terms of the train operating system.”
