Security guard who found Vegas gunman was alone and …

An unarmed security guard at Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino was the first to take on gunman Stephen Paddock, getting shot in the process, but providing crucial help for police looking to stop the massacre.

The security guard, identified as Jesus Campos by the International Union, Security, Police and Fire Professionals of America, was shot in the leg after Paddock fired at him through a door, police said.

Police said Paddock managed to fire off over 200 rounds as the security guard approached the suspect’s room alone. But the guard managed to direct police to the exact location of Paddock’s suite and even provided a hotel key to officers looking to clear rooms on the 32nd floor before they insisted he get medical attention.

Reached by phone Wednesday night, Campos told ABC News, “I’m fine.”

The guard who found the shooter and helped bring the massacre to an end said, “I was just doing my job.”

Campos provided information over the phone that helped authorities locate the 32nd-floor room that Paddock was firing from, a spokesperson for the union said.

Campos was on “random patrol” as a security officer at the hotel when he found the shooter, said Liliana Rodriguez, who identified herself as a coworker of Campos’ at Mandalay Bay on a GoFundMe page she set up for him.

Campos went to investigate a door alarm on the 32nd floor of the hotel when he “came under fire,” Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Undersheriff Kevin McMahill said in a press conference Friday.

McMahill called Campos an “absolute hero” who was “doing his job, diligently.”

“I can tell you that this was a remarkable effort by a brave and remarkable man,” McMahill said. “We haven’t done a good enough job recognizing his actions.”

Campos was unarmed when he engaged with Paddock, the union spokesperson confirmed, which was first reported by The Daily Beast1.

“Any one of us could have been in the position he was in,” Rodriguez wrote. “Most importantly we are a home away from home and at the end of the day we are a team and we should all go home together.”

Speaking Thursday evening, Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo praised Campos, saying he aided officers in their search for Paddock.

Lombardo added that Paddock fired “well over 200 rounds” into the hallway when the security guard approached. Paddock had set up a camera in the hallway, apparently to watch for approaching authorities.

“It’s amazing” that Campos didn’t sustain more injuries, Lombardo said.

“His bravery was amazing,” Lombardo added. “He gave our officers the key card for the room and then continued clearing rooms until he was ordered to go seek attention.”

On Sunday, about 22,000 concertgoers were attending the final night of the Route 91 Harvest Festival on the Las Vegas Strip — across the street from the Mandalay Bay hotel — when Paddock began his deadly assault.

It took authorities just minutes to locate where the bullets were coming from after the attack rang out.

Once police breached the door to Paddock’s suite on the 32nd floor of the hotel, they found him dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A total of 58 people were killed and hundreds were injured in the attack.

A motive is still not known, but police said the shooting was “obviously premeditated.”

ABC News’ James Hill and Michael DelMoro contributed to this report.

Theia lenses approved for Dahua 4K box camera

Theia s lenses are designed to meet needs of a new range of 4K analytics-rich cameras and ensure true 4K resolution systems. Video surveillance specialist Dahua has qualified the Theia 4K lens family for use with its IPC-HF81230E Ultra HD Box Camera. The combination provides video surveillance professionals with one of the most advanced imaging technologies available.

Theia s 4K lenses offer resolution performance that matches the image quality 4K sensor cameras promise, but aren t always able to provide due to inferior lens selection. Theia s lenses resolve the 1.55 micron-sized pixel of the 1/2.3 4K sensors, while covering the larger 1/1.7 4K imagers. Verticals/sectors which they are suitable for include shopping centres, stadiums and open public spaces. They can be used for any application where a high level of detail and precision is needed for analytics-rich applications. This includes facial recognition and behavioural studies, especially in environments where there is lots of activity or total area coverage is needed. Dahua IPC-HF81230E 12MP Box Network Camera Features The varifocal lens family covers a horizontal field of view from 112 to 9 degrees, with the SL410 4-10mm lens and SL1250 12-50mm lens. Theia lenses maintain 4K resolution in day and night with 5 microns focus shift in near infrared light. They are 52mm and more compact than the comparable 1/1.7 4K lenses, allowing use in smaller enclosures and some domes. At F/1.4 the SL410 has the fastest F number and the best light gathering ability of any 4k 1/1.7 format varifocal lens available in the surveillance market.

The CS mount lenses are available in manual, DC-auto or P-iris versions; fully motorized, board and C mount versions are also available. Dahua says: When paired with Theia s 4K lenses, Dahua s IPC-HF81230E Ultra HD Box Camera is able to deliver very high image quality to the market enabling analytics and other high detail applications, says Daniel Chau, overseas marketing director. About Theia Theia Technologies provides high quality 4K and megapixel lenses for security and machine vision applications. Best of both worlds: Why an IoT that is both open and secure should be a right, not a privilege

A recent report by SAS and the Centre for Economics and Business Research estimated that by 2020, big data and the internet of things (IoT) will be worth 322bn to the UK economy, and account for 2.7% of GDP. Gartner forecasts that IoT endpoints will reach a global installed base of 20.4 billion units by 2020. IoT networks are already critical to global public and private sector infrastructure, delivering ever expanding capacities and potential benefits.

However, among the many pressures that are rising from the growth of IoT, two are becoming critical: throttled growth of new applications caused by non-interoperative, proprietary technology; and a widening field of security vulnerabilities, only growing more pressing as IoT permeates modern life. As IoT networks connect more and more services throughout our cities, business and homes they are rapidly becoming one of the most critical technologies underpinning our daily lives. Yet we see a great discrepancy in the requirements and demands of cities, utilities and enterprises on the network operators. Does this mean they are not taking their role as seriously as they should, or instead that the essential requirements are not yet well understood? It might seem like wishful thinking to expect that IoT networks should be both open to future development and secure against attack. It isn t. In fact, demanding the best in both these areas is utterly essential. IoT is moving beyond its roots, where devices were predominantly single-ownership/ single-use solutions. They are now able to connect to several different domains and work best when they have open and equal access to data, controllers and platforms simultaneously.

At the same time, security standards are being agreed to ensure that all devices are insulated against and able to respond to breaches. At Silver Spring Networks, we felt it was time that the buyers of IoT Networks understood how important and achievable balancing security and openness has become. Delivering security at a city-wide scale Persistent detection and safeguards from unauthorised access are two of the most important rights that all IoT network providers should confidently demand. Many IoT network platforms have only the most introductory and basic security measures which, given the interconnected nature of most networks, permits serious vulnerabilities to develop. The 2016 DDOS attack on Dyn, one of the companies running the internet s domain name system, provides an example of the repercussions of insufficiently secured IoT devices: disrupting of the connection of thousands of internet users from big online retailers and other popular sites. Shortly after this attack, a tech industry veteran demonstrated the vulnerability of unsecured IoT devices even further. By connecting a $55 IoT security camera to the internet, it was discovered that a full penetration cyber-attack could be carried out in just 98 seconds. IoT networks are large and are often very complex, with multiple points of entry and multiple touchpoints. Furthermore, when compared to computers, tablets and phones they typically have simplified user interfaces to reduce cost and simplify installation.

However, the assumption that large IoT networks cannot be made secure is wrong. Best in class IoT networks harness top-tier, military grade security, including features such as automated, asymmetric key exchange and rotation; hardened crypto processors used in key generation and storage; AES encryption to protect data in transit; and authentication via certificates at multiple layers, including prior to network enrolment. The ability to deploy formware upgrades swiftly and reliably to all nodes in a network is also an essential feature to ensure that networks remain secure across coming decades. Organisations working with IoT networks should be able to confirm that this level of security is present across their entire network, and address any segments where those standards are not or cannot be met. Ensuring an open, adaptable and future-fit network Cyber-attacks will always present a significant and costly liability to IoT networks, but they are not the only threat to consider. We live in a world where technology is evolving at a break-neck pace and new applications are emerging constantly. Networks which are locked into a single vendor s products or proprietary platform, which can t easily adapt to innovation, will also be the cause to painful costs down the line. The best insurance against this future is to deploy a solution based on proper industry standards. Proprietary technologies posing as standards (LoRaWAN, for example) effectively lock in to an ecosystem built around a single chipset.

This threatens interoperability down the line, which leads to massive and costly technical iteration and system integration efforts, all while capping the network s ultimate functionality. The best way to ensure a diverse ecosystem is to implement open, standards-based technologies that are demonstrated to be interoperable at every level of the system. The Wireless Smart Ubiquitous Network (Wi-SUN) standard is set up on this principle. Wi-SUN was designed to underpin the operation and deployment on next-generation star, mesh and hybrid networks. These networks are designed to capitalise on many connected paths, to deliver fast, reliable and city-scale coverage. Each node relays data for the network to provide strong and stable connectivity. Wi-SUN is maintained by a third-party organisation that constantly tests to certify that the IoT equipment is both conformant to the standard and interoperable with other certified networks, fostering a diverse ecosystem. Open standards allow a far greater number of providers to develop solutions, which are tested for interoperability, ensuring those solutions can work together. The best new IoT software, whether it be for management of Smart Grid applications (smart metering, real time grid balancing, renewable management etc.), management of city services (Smart street lighting, traffic flow optimisation, flood monitoring and management, Smart parking optimisation etc.), smart logistics, smart agriculture or many others the best and most effective functionality will only be unlocked through comprehensive, integrated end-to-end solutions.

Networks built around an industry standard that emphasises openness and development is essential to delivering this. Your right to best-in-class IoT At Silver Spring Networks, we think that its past time that IoT network providers were held to standards which reflect the incredible impact of IoT technology on society, now and into the future. We have set out the lessons we have delivering 26 million IoT devices across five continents into a bill of 10 rights IoT customers must be empowered to demand be enshrined in any IoT network services agreement. Security and openness are just two of these. IoT s potential to provide an incredible uplift to society across the world has only just begun to unfold. The buyers of IoT networks have the means to steer this future, by arming themselves with the information and courage to demand nothing less than the absolute best from their providers. Advanced launches peripheral expansion network node for more flexible, configurable networking

Fire systems Advanced claims its latest new product makes networking more flexible and configurable than ever. The PENN (peripheral expansion network node) is a card and network node that accommodates Advanced s range of peripheral input and output cards anywhere on the network, and up to 1.5km from the nearest fire panel or next PENN node. Covering everything from input, interface and i/o cards to relay, sounder, LED and switch cards, up to 32 peripheral cards can be attached to a PENN and 199 PENNs can be added to a network.

More than 6,000 peripheral cards can therefore be added almost anywhere around the network. Until now, peripheral cards could only be connected to a fire panel s P-BUS although Advanced stresses that this remains an option and no more distant than 10 metres from the panel. Advanced s ease-of-use and the power and resilience of its networking are already well understood and admired, says Aston Bowles, head of marketing at Advanced. The PENN provides our customers with more freedom, even simpler installation, and configuration that improves performance and reduces installation costs. Freeing the peripheral cards from the panel is a good idea, but the creative ways our customers are using the PENN and peripheral cards to solve installation and configuration challenges is genuinely surprising, and we re seeing it used on all manner and sizes of projects.

The PENN is currently compatible with Advanced s MxPro multiprotocol panels and Axis EN fire systems.

IFSEC 2017 in review: Borders & Infrastructure Expo makes triumphant debut and Brian Cox draws biggest-ever keynote audience

Professor Brian Cox gave a thought-provoking lecture on the origins of the universe in front of a record audience at the Honeywell-sponsored Keynote Theatre in Safety and Health Expo 2017, which was co-located with IFSEC 2017. Addressing a packed audience, the TV presenter and physicist extraordinaire said he had asked the organisers if they needed me to talk about safety and security. They said no; just talk about the universe.

Other keynotes included double Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes, rugby union Referee Nigel Owens MBE and Falklands War veteran Simon Weston CBE. Product launches Elsewhere, IFSEC International which took place over three days between 20-20 June at London ExCeL was, as usual, the chosen launchpad for a plethora of brand-new, cutting-edge products. Among the innovations unveiled at the show was Veracity s end-to-end command and control system, Edesix s new body-worn camera series, Calipsa s AI-powered video monitoring platform and Redvision s quietest, fastest ever PTZ and mould-breaking rugged camera enclosure. IDIS, meanwhile, introduced a new seven-year warranty the longest in the industry. Read more about the products launched at IFSEC here. Borders & Infrastructure Expo Perhaps the most significant new feature introduced for the 2017 edition was Borders & Infrastructure Expo. Sponsored by Genetec, this show within a show featured the Drone Zone, BRE Global/LPCB Attack Testing Zone, VIP Meeting Service, JSaRC and the Borders & Infrastructure Theatre. Former IATA (International Air Transport Association) chief John Hedley argued that we re making life too easy for terrorists in the Borders & Infrastructure Theatre on day one. We also reported on how police and security drone use on the rise.

Speaking of drones, The Drone Zone wowed the crowds with live airborne demonstrations of drone technology from Yuneec and Aviat Drones, among other innovative developers and service providers, with support from the UK Drone Show. Installer World An area of the show dedicated to installers was another IFSEC first. Sponsored by RISCO, Installer World featured the Tool Zone where, courtesy of Anglia Tools, visitors could sample a wide range of hand and power tools and take advantage of exclusive discounts workwear, the Engineers of Tomorrow competition, recruitment consultants and a networking bar all in one place. Installers, engineers and integrators could test and trial more than 10,000 of the latest products from leading suppliers such as Hikvision and Panasonic. embedded content Videos and photos The whole experience was documented expertly once again by IFSEC TV (courtesy of Silverstream), with exhibitors demonstrating some of their latest innovations to camera as they did to visitors. Among the interviewees was Martin Gren, who co-founded the surveillance giant in 1984 and recently topped the security manufacturers/service providers category in our roll call of the Top 50 influencers in security & fire 2017. Watch some highlights from across the three days here or check out some of the best photos from London ExCeL. As is becoming an IFSEC Global tradition, we challenged security technology vendors at IFSEC 2017 to pitch their products to camera in just 30 seconds. The challenge was taken up by Paxton, HID Global, Pelco, CSL, AxxonSoft, Dahua, Uniview Technologies, Vanderbilt, Kedacom, LT Security, Promise Technology and Genetec.

Seminars The seminar theatres were particularly busy in a year when security-related issues have rarely been out of the national and international headlines. In the Security Management Theatre, a packed audience heard how video analytics was oversold and underutilised but key to preventing terror attacks. We also reported from the same theatre on the trends shaping the future of access control. The Tavcom Theatre, meanwhile, featured presentations on cybersecurity, preparing CCTV evidence for the criminal courts and how to optimise your network for CCTV, among other things. Nedap previews IFSEC 2017: vehicle identification, mobile access and more

Nedap has a big focus on mobile access at IFSEC 2017. Mainland Europe is well presented at the trade and Nedap Identification Systems uses the show to launch new products and new innovations. To preview IFSEC 2017, we asked Maarten Mijwaart, general manager of Nedap Identification Systems, what he expects from Nedap at IFSEC 2017.

IFSEC Global: What solutions and products will Nedap be demonstrating this year? Maarten Mijwaart: This year we will demonstrate to the industry that we have invested significantly in further expanding and improving our portfolio of security products. A few examples are: Last year we introduced MACE, our platform for mobile access control. We have greatly improved the possibilities of the cloud based MACE Admin Portal. Virtual cards can now be easily distributed and also revoked by our partners or their end users. Virtual cards can be customized to reflect the corporate style of customers. And we can even authenticate the identity of the virtual card holder by using the fingerprint if that is stored in the phone operating system. Our uPASS product line of Rain RFID / UHF readers is expanded with uPASS Target, our best performing long range UHF reader for vehicle identification to date. The uPASS Target can now also be equipped with a second antenna to expand the reading area or to support an entry and exit lane with one reader.

We have also added new UHF tags to our portfolio. A UHF Rearview Mirror Tag that motorists can easily hang on their rear-view mirror. Additionally, EPC GEN2 V2 cards and windshield tags are available that support security enhancements based on AES encryption. Our TRANSIT Ultimate readers for high end vehicle and driver identification have been redesigned last year. This year we are focusing on improvements to optimize the overall performance and configurability of this market leading RFID reader. IG: Why should end users stop by at the Nedap booth this year? MM : We feel that many people are not aware of the benefits that our products can bring. Making security systems a little more convenient for people to use will greatly increase the support of people in organizations for the security systems that are implemented. Access control systems that slow down people or their vehicles often end up not being used in the best way possible, which decrease the security level of your organisation.

Security should not be in the way of people. Our solutions make security and convenience go hand in hand. In the building and outside the building. For people and for vehicles. IG: Why should system integrators consider working with Nedap and its products? MM : Well, for one because we understand the importance of our partner channel. We understand that they are the one that convert our products into solutions for their clients. That is why we try and make their lives as easy as possible. Our long range readers are engineered to support specific applications as good as possible.

We support many interfacing possibilities. Our products are documented well and are certified by radio authorities to be used in most countries in this world. Our partner portal makes a wealth of support material available and our free e-learning courses help you on your way quickly. And last but not least: our support staff and commercial staff are more than willing to lend you a helping hand when needed. Another reason is that we have a track record in providing high quality products. Our products are tested against competitive products regularly and almost always tend to be the preferred solution. And when we do get feedback on how to improve our products, we listen carefully and are able to implement these improvements without delay because our ability to do product developments and improvements ourselves. With our own team of engineers. We strive to be market leading.

We are constantly working on expanding and improving our portfolio. With only one simple reason: we d like to make sure that, in our field, we are the logical choice to work with. Now and in the future.

IFSEC 2017 preview: Abloy UK on Cliq Connect, sustainability, and the benefits of electric locks

Sponsored by Genetec, Borders & Infrastructure Expo will take place between 20-22 June 2017 as part of IFSEC International and the wider Protection & Management Series. IFSEC exhibitor Abloy UK, which provides high quality electric and mechanical security locking solutions, is focusing on borders and critical infrastructure this year, the company s head of PEU, Steve Wintle, told IFSEC Global in an interview you can read below. IFSEC Global: What s your priority at IFSEC?

Steve Wintle: The focus this year on borders and infrastructure. That s an area that Abloy are very focused on, especially with Cliq Connect and how it s evolving. Cliq offers benefits not just from a security and health and safety point of view but also delivers operational efficiencies. IG: What kind of customers will you be looking to meet at the event? SW: I m hoping that we re going to meet people from all national infrastructure sectors. We re involved across all sectors, but our focus is on national infrastructure. We have quite good relationships in some sectors, not quite as good in others. And therefore we re definitely looking to broaden our relationships or opportunities across all CNI sectors. Steve Wintle IG: What is so special about Cliq?

SW: It is becoming a recognised solution for infrastructure. On the back of that we are continuing to develop and add more features to Cliq. One recent addition is mapping. Through integration with permit to work systems we ve got examples of where we ve used it with infrastructure. It s providing greater control and tightening up not just from a security point of view but from a health and safety one too. You re able to ensure that whoever is working on a certain plant or within certain areas are compliant and trained to be working on that kind of equipment or within those areas. IG: And what about the people who install or integrate the systems? How do you work with them? SW: We have a network of approved installers.

They ve been through training, and because of their geographical locations are able to provide day to day technical support whether it be for electro-mechanical or mechanical systems. So we have a well-established network of installers and distributors who are able to work with and support the end user on a local basis. IG: How important is sustainability? Is this something you re striving to improve? SW: Absolutely. It s something we re getting asked about constantly. Whenever we re tendering for contracts, especially within infrastructure, part of the prequalification is often questions on how we manage the environment or risk to environment, sustainability of raw material, resources, and use of natural resources or power or water. So the Abloy Group has people who are driving that internally to make sure we re staying up there with the latest government guidance on sustainability. But it s also driven by our customers.

Because they re being encouraged to use businesses that are environmentally aware and can support them in achieving their green credentials. IG: Going back to IFSEC, is there anything else you want to highlight? SW: We will be showing a new J handle often used on data racks and our electric lock range which is very relevant following recent events in Manchester and London as an the electric lock can provide a more effective method of securing a building in a dynamic lock down scenario and is fully compliant with BS EN 13637. The reason electric locks can be very effective is that they always provide a mechanical means of escape but will self-lock even without power, unlike a magnet that once the power is cut the door is left insecure. In terms of green credentials electric locks also only use power when operated whereas magnets use power constantly so electric locks deliver a significant reduction in the carbon footprint of a business. We will also be demonstrating CliQ Connect, which takes key control to another level. The benefit of CliQ Connect being that if a key is lost or stolen, it won t open anything until it s been activated by the owner of the key or via integration with a permit-to-work system. Which is ideal for handing to contractors and knowing that the contractor can t access a site without prior authorisation, which is critical for managing health and safety as well as security benefits, especially for CNI critical national infrastructure sites.
