Nedap previews IFSEC 2017: vehicle identification, mobile access and more

Nedap has a big focus on mobile access at IFSEC 2017. Mainland Europe is well presented at the trade and Nedap Identification Systems uses the show to launch new products and new innovations. To preview IFSEC 2017, we asked Maarten Mijwaart, general manager of Nedap Identification Systems, what he expects from Nedap at IFSEC 2017.

IFSEC Global: What solutions and products will Nedap be demonstrating this year? Maarten Mijwaart: This year we will demonstrate to the industry that we have invested significantly in further expanding and improving our portfolio of security products. A few examples are: Last year we introduced MACE, our platform for mobile access control. We have greatly improved the possibilities of the cloud based MACE Admin Portal. Virtual cards can now be easily distributed and also revoked by our partners or their end users. Virtual cards can be customized to reflect the corporate style of customers. And we can even authenticate the identity of the virtual card holder by using the fingerprint if that is stored in the phone operating system. Our uPASS product line of Rain RFID / UHF readers is expanded with uPASS Target, our best performing long range UHF reader for vehicle identification to date. The uPASS Target can now also be equipped with a second antenna to expand the reading area or to support an entry and exit lane with one reader.

We have also added new UHF tags to our portfolio. A UHF Rearview Mirror Tag that motorists can easily hang on their rear-view mirror. Additionally, EPC GEN2 V2 cards and windshield tags are available that support security enhancements based on AES encryption. Our TRANSIT Ultimate readers for high end vehicle and driver identification have been redesigned last year. This year we are focusing on improvements to optimize the overall performance and configurability of this market leading RFID reader. IG: Why should end users stop by at the Nedap booth this year? MM : We feel that many people are not aware of the benefits that our products can bring. Making security systems a little more convenient for people to use will greatly increase the support of people in organizations for the security systems that are implemented. Access control systems that slow down people or their vehicles often end up not being used in the best way possible, which decrease the security level of your organisation.

Security should not be in the way of people. Our solutions make security and convenience go hand in hand. In the building and outside the building. For people and for vehicles. IG: Why should system integrators consider working with Nedap and its products? MM : Well, for one because we understand the importance of our partner channel. IFSEC 2017 preview: Abloy UK on Cliq Connect, sustainability, and the benefits of electric locks

IFSEC Global: What s your priority at IFSEC?

Steve Wintle: The focus this year on borders and infrastructure. That s an area that Abloy are very focused on, especially with Cliq Connect and how it s evolving. Cliq offers benefits not just from a security and health and safety point of view but also delivers operational efficiencies. IG: What kind of customers will you be looking to meet at the event? SW: I m hoping that we re going to meet people from all national infrastructure sectors. We re involved across all sectors, but our focus is on national infrastructure. We have quite good relationships in some sectors, not quite as good in others. And therefore we re definitely looking to broaden our relationships or opportunities across all CNI sectors. Steve Wintle IG: What is so special about Cliq?

SW: It is becoming a recognised solution for infrastructure. On the back of that we are continuing to develop and add more features to Cliq. One recent addition is mapping. Through integration with permit to work systems we ve got examples of where we ve used it with infrastructure. It s providing greater control and tightening up not just from a security point of view but from a health and safety one too. You re able to ensure that whoever is working on a certain plant or within certain areas are compliant and trained to be working on that kind of equipment or within those areas. IG: And what about the people who install or integrate the systems? How do you work with them? SW: We have a network of approved installers.

They ve been through training, and because of their geographical locations are able to provide day to day technical support whether it be for electro-mechanical or mechanical systems. So we have a well-established network of installers and distributors who are able to work with and support the end user on a local basis. IG: How important is sustainability? Is this something you re striving to improve? SW: Absolutely. It s something we re getting asked about constantly. Whenever we re tendering for contracts, especially within infrastructure, part of the prequalification is often questions on how we manage the environment or risk to environment, sustainability of raw material, resources, and use of natural resources or power or water. So the Abloy Group has people who are driving that internally to make sure we re staying up there with the latest government guidance on sustainability. But it s also driven by our customers.

Because they re being encouraged to use businesses that are environmentally aware and can support them in achieving their green credentials. IG: Going back to IFSEC, is there anything else you want to highlight? SW: We will be showing a new J handle often used on data racks and our electric lock range which is very relevant following recent events in Manchester and London as an the electric lock can provide a more effective method of securing a building in a dynamic lock down scenario and is fully compliant with BS EN 13637. The reason electric locks can be very effective is that they always provide a mechanical means of escape but will self-lock even without power, unlike a magnet that once the power is cut the door is left insecure. In terms of green credentials electric locks also only use power when operated whereas magnets use power constantly so electric locks deliver a significant reduction in the carbon footprint of a business. We will also be demonstrating CliQ Connect, which takes key control to another level. The benefit of CliQ Connect being that if a key is lost or stolen, it won t open anything until it s been activated by the owner of the key or via integration with a permit-to-work system. Which is ideal for handing to contractors and knowing that the contractor can t access a site without prior authorisation, which is critical for managing health and safety as well as security benefits, especially for CNI critical national infrastructure sites. We need joint cyber-physical teams for cyber-physical alerts

IFSEC presentations James Willison BA, MA, MSyI is a respected specialist in security convergence and enterprise risk management. Also founder of Unified Security Ltd, Willison is speaking at IFSEC 2017 about How vendors can support ESRM and CSM strategies and What security managers need to know about cybersecurity . We caught up with James to find out a little more about these topics in advance of Europe s largest annual security show.

IFSEC Global: Hi, James, please tell us a bit about what you ll be talking about at IFSEC with Sarb Sembhi James Willison: We re going to be talking about how vendors can support enterprise security risk management. There s lots happening in the corporate strategy of bringing risk silos together and identifying cyber-physical attacks which is great. However, how can vendors help them better achieve this? Can they provide technologies which will actually calculate enterprise security risks? How can they make sure they re supplying secure software and secure technology? We ll also cover the strategic side of security management. So security managers, what do they do on their side?

How do they manage technology they re going to buy, how do they know it s good rather than bad so looking at principles really. It s high level strategy rather than technical. We won t be giving details on all the firewall stuff or what sort of software you re using. It s more about what sort of thing you should be looking for and relationships between suppliers and installers and what impressions they re giving the client. I m doing that talk with Sarb Sembhi. What we re saying to vendors is you ve got an opportunity to lead the market in identity access management because the information security guys aren t really doing it on a large scale IG: And what about your talk, alongside Steven Kenny of Axis Communications, about cybersecurity? JW: We ll be talking about what Axis are doing, which I know quite a lot about because I m working with them. Steve will cover hardening the cybersecurity of their products and systems and I will look at how these should be managed in an enterprise or smart city. And I ll be giving a strategic look at multi-disciplinary security teaming, which is what converged security really is.

But basically I ll be saying that people have talked about convergence quite a lot in the last few years, all over the world. But what we need is united cyber-physical teams working in tandem on cyber-physical alerts. Barclays recently merged their physical and cybersecurity teams into one big security team with technology that is cyber-physical and responding in real time. The highest level of achievement in this area would be them, Deutsche Telekom and BT. Some corporations are doing this converged security management but others are doing enterprise security, which is looking at all security risks but their teams are still siloed. So they re looking at all security risks but separately. What we re advocating is that even if you can t form one big department because of organisational problems, you form a separate team that includes both information and physical security people not just one or the other. CISOs tend not to think physical security systems providers really have the capability to offer cyber-physical security solutions IG: At least it makes sure they re talking to each other JW: Yes. I know these teams exist, but they re quite rare.

In our talk we consider how these teams can use converged technologies to respond to attacks on their physical security systems. We look at important actions to take in this area and this will be of particular relevance for security professionals working in the smart cities of the future. Out of interest, South Korea, a leader in smart cities, had an InfoSec type show recently and they had 15-20,000 information security people there, with 28,000 physical. So that was interesting as they discussed cyber-physical security, convergence, IoT and new technologies. Something to watch IG: Why do you think there is so little take up of cyber-physical security offerings from physical security vendors? JW: I think because the people looking after that would usually be the chief information security officer, and they don t think physical security systems providers really have the capability to offer cyber-physical security solutions. These vendors have specialised in physical up until now and to get into that market is quite hard because there are a lot of information security type access systems, obviously for IT, but identity access management is a big part of that. I think some of that will converge. I ve been to conferences where they talk about identity access management all day because it s on the network.

Then there are loads of products around that and some will include a physical element. What we re saying in our talk is you ve got an opportunity to lead the market because the information security guys aren t really doing it on a large scale. It s a growth area. And the internet of things obviously will impact all this. IG: Could you just clarify the kind of security professionals who will benefit from the talk? JW: We have a three-pronged approach. What you should be doing in your organisation to converge or have multi-disciplinary teams and how you can do that. You can take the initiative by going to HR and saying you want to form one, can you help me, because maybe I m not getting help from the IT people. So that shows initiative, to see what they say back before they come back and make you do it anyway.

HR might just realise they can form one department to save money. They no longer need two security functions. That s been an issue in the past. Someone tells them they need only one person to run the whole security department to include every area of security. There s this fear that all the chief information security guys are going to take over physical security. A lot of jobs are now advertised in this area, when you dig deep into them they re looking for chief information security officers. The IT companies don t see the point of siloing off. They tend to be more digitalised and, well, you need to know about IT anyway. But if you don t know about it, what are you doing here?

IG: As ever, it sounds like the technology is evolving faster than the corporate culture can keep up with. Is there anything else you want to mention? JW: Just that we re publishing a white paper with Axis on this subject, called Supporting Enterprise Security Risk Management, How vendors can support ESRM and CSM strategies . Magnetically-driven PTZ cameras and bespoke camera housing: Redvision rejects one-size-fits-all ethos of CCTV market

Paul Hucker, founder, Redvision Redvision recently unveiled two innovations that it believes distinguishes itself in a market characterised by homogeneity and a misguided emphasis on driving down the price of hardware. Unveiled to a select audience of customers and contacts the Volant is a PTZ camera that Redvision says moves faster, more accurately and more quietly than anything else on the market. Vega, meanwhile, means integrators can offer clients the chance to customise camera housing to meet their aesthetic needs.

IFSEC Global caught up with the company s founder and director, Paul Hucker, and MD, Dermot Grace, to find out how the company is positioning itself in the surveillance market and its plans for IFSEC. Hi, Dermot. Where do you sit in what is a crowded CCTV market? And what are your USPs? Dermot Grace: Redvision is one of the pioneers of the rugged PTZ Pan, Tilt, Zoom marketplace.

There are probably three or four major manufacturers worldwide and we would probably command a substantial market, certainly within the UK market. Our routes to market have historically largely been through our distribution partners, which we re looking to develop further within Continental Europe. IG: The next obvious question is about your new product launches Paul Hucker: We re at IFSEC to launch two new product ranges: Vega and Volant. Volant is the fastest, most Dermot Grace, MD, Redvision accurate, quietest PTZ on the planet. A PTZ used to move at 60 degrees per second but with the Volant it s now almost instantaneous: about 400 degrees per second. Volant will move to the exact position it needs to go to. If cameras respond quicker you stand a much better chance of getting evidential or dynamic information. Because the cost of installing a camera in a town centre is huge, people don t spend enough money on the cost of the equipment itself. Paul Hucker It also has infinity motors which can remember exactly where they were before.

PTZs have motors and gears and the gears add a degree of inaccuracy and a degree of wear. But the infinity motors are magnetically driven so the motor s resolution is huge compared to a geared system. It will register within 0.01 of a degree every time That means cameras can cover a larger area or a smaller area at distance more effectively. So it s very much for areas where they want the best in what technology can offer right now. With this camera range we have standard cameras and cameras with adaptive IR and adaptive white light. Adaptive means the actual beam angle of the illumination varies with the angle of the zoom lens. We have a number of high net worth customers who like the white light because it s a visual deterrent. Another feature of the Volant is it is completely silent. That s because it s moving by magnetic force.

We re the only company using infinity drive motors in a big PTZ. We ve taken something generally used in military and using it in a commercial application. While it s more expensive than the commodity products, the overall cost of ownership is low. Because the cost of installing a camera in a town centre is huge and people don t spend enough money on the cost of the equipment itself. The equipment is running continuously, and continuously moving, so it has a very high duty cycle. We ve had high demand already for a lot of public buildings to be monitored using a thermal version of the Volant. One reason is it s so much more accurate and better at analytics than other PTZs. You can apply analytics to it with certainty that you ll get the same picture every time. It s the equivalent of a static camera with up to 200 positions.

All we re trying to say is one size doesn t fit all. Driven by price, most CCTV players have come up with the same solution. Paul Hucker IG: The customised housing concept of the Vega range is an interesting innovation in a market where, frankly, one bullet camera looks very much like the next DG: One USP Redvision has as a business is its complete flexibility. We can come up with different paint finishes and it s surprising how many customers do need these specialisations. It could be colours. Bournemouth College had a particular colour. This was done within a week or so, so it s a very fast turnaround. PH: The Volant is a side-mount PTZ rather than a normal PTZ, which gives us flexibility to do custom options on the camera mechanism. For clients we can offer different lens options for thermals.

IG: To what extent do you think there s too much focus on the price of hardware? PH: I think it s a huge issue. We are potentially devaluing the overall marketplace by focusing on price rather than functionality. If you look at other sectors hi-fi systems or cars people go for premium brands for a reason. I m not saying there isn t room for budget brands, but at the moment we re in danger of devaluing the options. DG: So much so that installers are saying to us great, this is a different solution that I can take to my customers. They can differentiate themselves with their customers. It s pretty much solution selling. PH: All we re trying to say is one size doesn t fit all.

The Vega is a range of camera houses we ve launched because driven by price, most CCTV players have come up with the same solution. The cameras are getting smaller and smaller and less obtrusive, which is a good thing in some respects, but we feel cameras should have a bit of physical presence and be a bit tougher. We want to do several variants of the Vega housing to look more like street furniture. For example it can be colour coded on a public building. It s got things like a built-in windscreen wiper as it rains in the UK a lot. DG: And when it s in the parked position, you can t see it, it s out of the field of view. Also, within the camera housing we ve got the opportunity for PoE. PH: This is being launched at IFSEC as a concept with empty housing but we will add to it. We re creating an explosion-proof version.

Explosion-proof cameras generally have a stainless steel tube with stainless steel ends and one with a little window and it s not developed much over the past 20-30 years. DG: In fact, the number of ancillary equipment manufacturers has declined so there s little choice. The demand is out there. Paul always says let s say you want a camera in a BMW showroom they may want the camera housing in the BMW colours. Most manufacturers are only set up for mass production. But we ve got applications where we ve adapted our standard product for critical applications like the nuclear industry. Dermot Grace PH: Because it has very easy access into the camera housing you can do all your PoE or fibre convertor work in there. Anything that normally goes in the junction box, you can put in the housing. You don t need an ugly junction box on the wall, it s one less thing to install, and it s all integrated.

It s been designed so it can work both ways. Normally a camera housing has a top and a bottom. The Vega is symmetrical in look, so on a garage forecourt, for example, it could go under a canopy, you switch the bracket and it looks OK. It looks more aesthetically pleasing. IG: ?What kind of verticals do you particularly thrive, or hope to thrive, in? PH: Town centre application is our biggest single market. High net worth individuals and any CNI areas are important too. DG: If we take our existing X-Series domes, they re big in the utilities sector and in the remote deployable sector. The thermal market in general is growing quite substantially.

So we re challenging this product to sit across a wide spectrum of marketplaces. As well as traditional CCTV we re looking at military applications and other verticals we can move into. PH: Also it s more led by the quality integrators that actually want to keep some value in the project. They re selling the benefits of Redvision through their channels. You have to bear in mind we re a product manufacturer who doesn t sell products directly to the end user although we do show the end user. It s not always easy to work out the exact routes. We ve lost more of the smaller installers to lower cost kit. But the larger integrator, the likes of ADT, Quadrant can see the benefits of Redvision. DG: Whenever we ve shown this product to a customer in a pre-launch meeting they ve said wow, that looks really nice.

The same will apply to the camera housing. Even the ATEX housing is designed differently. Ease of use will be far better than what exists out there and it will be competitively priced because of the way it s been engineered. PH: In short, we ll be exploring more verticals because our ambition is to get to a 10m company in the next three years. Now we re a 3m company so we have to find niches for that. We re not going after the mass market. IG: What about distribution? DG: We ve signed an agreement with industry professionals representing five brands to represent Redvision throughout Scandinavia, central Europe and Southern Europe. They will use IFSEC as the launch platform.

Unlike many large companies, you can phone us and talk to someone. Paul Hucker IG: What are your thoughts on the future of CCTV? PH: We think use of thermal imaging will become four times as common over the next five years and we think the price will halve. So there will be price pressure but not to the same degree as other markets. We certainly see within five years that a third of our business or more will be on that product. We also see ourselves getting involved in other niche verticals and promoting the cosmetic side of CCTV. IG: Is there a benefit in being British? PH: We re more in touch with the needs of the UK market. There are several unique features resulting from our contact with the UK market.

DG: Most manufacturers are only set up for mass production. But we ve got applications where we ve adapted our standard product for critical applications like the nuclear industry. So that s how we d differentiate ourselves from a high volume manufacturer: total flexibility. IG: Do customers want the ability to customise? DG: Certainly. I think the fundamental thing is it s the voice of the customer that we re listening to. We reposition our products based on that. We also focus on customer service. Our turnaround time on any return is a maximum of 72 hours on receipt, 48 hours of those are on test.

PH: We ve had reports that some of our competitors take three months. These investments are long term and customers want to know they have good back-up for 5-10 years. DG: Our lead time to most distributors is seven working days. PH: The other thing is, three of our guys are on tech support. Unlike many large companies, you can phone us and talk to someone. If you have an issue onsite and normally it s install related rather than product related we are there 9-5, Monday to Friday. DG: We also have people who can attend site. Sometimes a problem has nothing to do with the product; it might be the VMS software controlling it. We have people in the north and south.

In our offices we have hot desks, so if someone phones in about an Avigilon platform, we can put that into the desktop and bring it up. So we can quickly replicate what they re talking about and talk them through what they need to do. PH: We can either do key by key or take over the set up if we need to. DG: We can accommodate most commonly used platforms, from 20 or so manufacturers. We recently had an event at our factory and people were taken aback with our flexibility and support. ComNet enhances cybersecurity for port connections

IFSEC exhibitor ComNet Europe, part of the US manufacturer or transmission and communication networking equipment ComNet Communication Networks, has introduced a new cybersecurity feature in its latest generation of self-managed switches. Known as Port Guardian, the feature has the capability to physically disconnect a port if unauthorised access is detected. Port Guardian can provide a line of defence in situations where network access is attempted by disconnecting an IP-addressable device on the edge in order to connect to the network.

Port Guardian senses the disconnection activity and in response an SNMP notification is sent to the head end. The affected port is physically locked out, preventing access. The network administrator can reopen the port once the threat is eliminated. The Port Guardian feature also rejects access through an activity known as spoofing by disconnecting the port when an interruption is sensed. Port Guardian is being added to the newest generation of ComNet SMS products, including the CNGE2+2SMS and CNGE4+2SMS. The feature will also be available on the new ComNet USA-made line of managed switches. According to Steve Clarke, ComNet Europe managing director: Cybersecurity is not something confined to just a security IP network. Any network can be infiltrated. Government ID cards are more secure with personalisation, claims HID Global

ID forgeries Greater personalisation and additional levels of security can help tackle ID card forgeries, according to HID Global. It is estimated that more than 90% of photo ID card inspections are undertaken visually in the field and these inspections are the main way of verifying and validating documents. Decisions to use a secondary inspection criteria is often based on the outcome of the visual inspection.

Thus, good badge design and the selection of the right custom ID card printing technology is critical, according to HID Global, a supplier of identity-based security systems and products. Furthermore the speed, cost-effectiveness, convenience and simplicity of visual inspections have made ID cards particularly popular for government applications such as national ID cards and permits. These cards and documents must be clearly authentic, so it is important to have well-designed visual security, advises the company. However, most visual security products tend to be exactly the same on every single document, which has been important for helping with verification as anomalies become quickly obvious. However, an added level of defence can be applied by personalising IDs with visual security features on the card. Josh Nippoldt, director of product marketing with HID Global, said: The ID designs can now play a role in the first line of defence against counterfeiting by taking visual security features and customising them to each unique card holder or user. Typical visual security features include holographic overlaminates and card pre-printing. Holographic overlaminates can include overt, covert and forensic features. Pre-printing options can include different printing techniques, special inks, relief structures and laser images.

Different combinations can be devised. Forgers are becoming more sophisticated as ID cards become more widespread. By implementing a range of diverse and high-level security features, these forgeries can be easily detected, helping to protect the government s citizens from security threats. Vanderbilt creates partner programme for installers and distributors

Global security system Vanderbilt has created a partner programme to help installers and distributors in areas such as training and marketing. After a series of acquisitions, Vanderbilt says it is in a position to consolidate the business and has made the development of customer and partner support programmes a priority. The company has called its programme Aspire.

Aspire s key theme is about a strong and mutually rewarding partnership between Vanderbilt and its customers. The programme is open to installers and distributors that do business directly with Vanderbilt, or via a certified distributor and is a major effort by Vanderbilt to broaden its service base and create long-term, incremental value for its partners, says Kim Loy, director of marketing.
