Detector testers to launch innovative new smoke detector tester at FIREX 2017

FIREX preview Detectortesters is unveiling Solo 365, a new smoke detector tester, at FIREX 2017. Solo 365 is lighter, quicker to test, compatible with a wider range of applications and almost impossible to over-apply, says the Hertfordshire-based company. A proximity sensor within the test cup triggers the generation of smoke by the auto-start feature, eliminating the risk of contamination and minimising smoke wastage.

And a new, flexible head and slimline design means Solo 365 can more easily access tight spaces and test more detectors. Responding to feedback from customers Detectortesters has added an auto LED torch for testing in dark areas. The torch automatically switches on when light levels drop. In common with other Detectortesters products, Solo 365 has been approved by leading detector manufacturers and is fully compliant with the latest standards and regulations. Detectortesters (AKA No Climb Products Ltd) has more than three decades experience in the design and manufacture of detector test equipment. It is also launching new aerosol cans which comply with forthcoming regulations affecting the use of some pressurised smoke aerosols for use in the Solo 330 dispenser. And the company is introducing a new Urban range of kit pitched at mobile engineers working on large sites and built-up areas. Solo 365 will be available later this month and will be the main focus of the Detectortesters stand atFIREX International. FIREX International takes place between 20-22 June 2017 at London ExCeL.

PSIM in 2013: predictions for the year ahead

PSIM in 2013: predictions for the year ahead Info4Security catches up with Keith Bloodworth, CEO of CNL Software, to discuss some of the key trends that shaped the PSIM market in 2012 and forecast directions for 2013. There’s little doubt that 2012 has been a great year for the global security industry, and not least for many Physical Security Information Management (PSIM) solution vendors who’ve witnessed their busiest year to date. That said, some commentators do feel that exaggerated claims have been made in PSIM’s favour.

In view of this, Info4Security wanted to elicit some ‘no nonsense’ answers to several questions around developments in the PSIM space and to ascertain the likely drivers for this market in the New Year. Here’s what Keith Bloodworth – the CEO of CNL Software, a central player in providing PSIM solutions for end users – has to say on the matter… Info4Security (I4S): Keith…

As 2012 draws to a close, what would you say were your observations about the PSIM market this year? Keith Bloodworth (KB): One of the key highlights for me was seeing the maturity of the PSIM market first hand. As I stood on the show floor at ASIS in Philadelphia, the questions from end users and the channel had moved on from: ‘What does the technology do?’ to ‘How are you different to other PSIM vendors?’ There has been a major shift towards a second generation of PSIM channel partners and end users: those who started their PSIM journey several years ago and are now looking for the next step up.

The result is that a number of very IT-savvy channel paartners switched over to CNL Software during 2012, largely due to the need for a product capable of real scale, configuration flexibility and the ability to process complex business processes.

2012 also saw a significant step forward for our own PSIM technology. For example, IPSecurityCenter played a pivotal role in the largest and most complex security aggregation project during the London Olympics. We also launched IPSCDevNet; the first-ever PSIM-focused development community.

We’ve also seen real growth for PSIM in some key markets such as mass transit, the healthcare sector, homeland defense, safe cities and ports, all of which have brought new opportunities and successes for IPSecurityCenter. I4S: Outside of CNL Software’s own projects, have you seen any other evidence of the maturity of the PSIM market in 2012? KB: Yes, we certainly have and it relates directly back to the PSIM capable channel.

It was good to see this backed up by Jeff Kessler from Imperial Capital in his latest Security Industry Monitor report. He points to IT proficient integrators gaining market share along with highly focused small/medium integrators with what he is calling IT IQ ‘Information Technology Intelligence Quotient’. PSIM is a major driver in this changing landscape as companies are taking real business and risk-related issues to the integrators rather than just installation and maintenance issues.

The market needs these companies to make a profitable business out of deploying PSIM, and it’s reassuring to see that someone like Jeff has recognised that it’s now driving their bottom line. We have also seen the emergence of new PSIM entrants in 2012. Three years ago if you walked the trade show floor at ASIS or ISC West you would have found a handful of PSIM players: CNL, Proximex, Vidsys, Nice/Orsus.

Today, there are in excess of 20 PSIM product suppliers and this year saw the largest surge of new PSIM companies enter the market. On top of this, we’ve also seen investment in PSIM coming from ‘multibillion dollar’ IT-centric companies like Microsoft, Cisco and EMC who, together with the likes of Tyco and BAE, have all placed financial investment in PSIM companies. I4S: Those were the key highlights of 2012.

Can we have your forecasts for 2013? KB: 2013 will be the year that PSIM goes mainstream. What we are seeing is an ever increasing number of RFPs specifying PSIM as the key solution to major projects.

Many of these RFPs are looking for technology solutions that can only be achieved by enterprise level PSIM or expensive bespoke solutions. We have seen a marked increase in the ambition, scale and complexity of new integration projects: ones which cannot be achieved by the majority of the entry level PSIM vendors and particularly those based on VMS or ACS sub-systems. These companies are great at integrating devices or alarm management, but many fall short when it comes down to complex operations or dynamic actions based on data inputs received from thirrd party applications or sub-systems.

My main prediction for 2013 is the separation of PSIM vendors into ‘classic’ market segments. At the high end those whose solutions truly scale will put major distance between themselves and those who rely on third party products for high availability/disaster recovery, for example, or those who don’t offer load balancing or need to turn off their solutions to complete updates. Mission critical systems just have to be ‘Always On’.

We believe this to be a core component of an enterprise PSIM solution moving forward. I4S: Where does the concept of ‘Federation’ fit in, and how do you see collaborative partnerships progressing? KB: Federation represents the ability to connect multiple systems at a large site or multiple security Control Rooms around the globe and create one holistic ‘Shield’.

This will be particularly important for large-scale global corporate operations. This type of solution will allow multiple sources of alarm handling, remote management and the connection of operations to reduce cost, improve efficiencies and bring greater visibility to the entire operation. It’s important that federated systems are not just seen as failover solutions, but rather as systems able to hand off operations to another centre whenever necessary.

Using a federated system to create a ‘follow the sun’ solution might mean that a Control Centre in India could monitor UK operations overnight, in turnreducing the need for night staff in attendance on site unless there was an event that required such a physical presence. It also allows global management of widespread security risks and disasters. In terms of collaborative partnerships, we expect the emergence of IT integrators within the physical security space mainly being responsible for the deployment of large-scale, complex PSIM projects, but working together with security integrators who do not currently have the required in-house skills.

These ‘collaborative’ partnerships have been around in IT for a long time, but they’re now winning deals in the PSIM space. Within these partnerships, they are also likely to write their own drivers for sub-systems or data connections using development tools like our own Driver Development Kit. We predict that even manufacturers will start producing drivers in order to connect to PSIM systems, although a number of the larger ones are implementing PSIA interoperability and allowing PSIM to connect using a standard driver.

I4S: What about end users and the increased deployment of PSIM intelligence? KB: 2013 will see end users giving greater focus to what they can do better with the knowledge they already have. We’re excited about the way large-scale transportation project managers are now looking to PSIM vendors to provide the ‘smarts’ in and out of the Control Room.

We’re working on tasks like ‘follow that train’, using core destination data to automate camera views from station to station. This is equally true in ports or airports, where arrival data can trigger standard operating procedures, in turn taking the responsibility away from the operator by pushing the intelligence into the system. Managing multiple analytics solutions will be a de facto standard, while rules-based workflow will be required.

The market will recognise the ROI of advanced video export: a ‘one click solution’ designed to gather all video related to an incident which then removes the need for the operator to reach into each of the native video recording systems. Coupled with video analytics, this feature enables intelligent searches around defined parameters and further reducesevidence collection times. When clients have 50,000+ cameras in a single connected system, live viewing can only be an option if triggered by an event.

In the future, most investigations will be run by automated processes outside of the Control Room. In 2013 we will see more customers requiring this level of intelligence which ensures the faster processing of evidence – an essential for large-scale applications as they rely less on live views and more on forensics. In this way, they get the evidential data faster, cheaper, more reliably and from a greater number of sources.

PSIM is really coming of age.

It’s reducing operating costs, speeding up evidence management, improving emergency preparedness and managing increasingly complex, mission critical security environments.

Honeywell’s new MB-Secure intruder and access control panel launches

Honeywell’s new MB-Secure intruder and access control panel launches Honeywell has launched its new generation intruder and access control panel MB-Secure, a modular panel that can be expanded over time. Launched this week to coincide with Security Essen 2012, the Honeywell MB-Secure is an open platform featuring firmware that allows the access control and security functionality to be activated as required using license keys. This means that users can integrate and extend functions from a simple extension of the intruder alarm system to the expansion into an access control and video surveillance system without the need to replace the main hardware.

This modular approach means the panel is scalable and will allow users to upgrade as required rather than investing in a new system.

Horst Richter, Product Marketing Manager at Honeywell Security Group said: “The use of static, inflexible security systems that have not changed over the years, clearly goes against the dynamic change in building utilization and security requirements that we are experiencing today. “Therefore, more and more flexible systems are demanded which can be adapted easily and at a reasonable price to meet the changing security needs.

Honeywell MB-Secure addresses this change, providing all functions of innovative security systems as one open platform.”
