Young professionals: Share your fire-safety ideas and jumpstart your career (and maybe win a prize)

INSTITUTE OF FIRE SAFETY MANAGERS Look around at any fire safety event aimed at the professionals and you will see a raft of experienced heads; you can tell that by the grey hair and, indeed, the lack of hair! It s a lot harder to spot the future fire safety expert; the ones just starting out on the journey that the older generation have travelled along. A recent article on IFSEC Global highlighted the skills shortage in fire systems engineering but that can be said of many fire disciplines too: fire risk assessors, fire engineers, fire safety managers and trainers.

The IFSM (Institute of Fire Safety Managers) council have young professionals on their radar, and below are some ideas and initiatives they would like to introduce, aimed directly at supporting the young and student members of the IFSM and wider fire safety community. Who are young professionals? Those in their teens, 20s and early 30s. Career pathways, mentor support and career opportunities One thing is obvious in the fire community: the career path the Fire and Rescue Service has provided for many senior figures in UK fire today. However, that system of progressing through the fire service isn t for everyone. Indeed, the flow of well-trained and experienced fire safety professionals leaving the service to work in the private sector has slowed down. Many other career paths into fire safety are less clearly defined, especially in the fields of fire-risk assessment and fire-risk management. A stepping stone! The IFSM is working with various organisations on a fire-safety apprenticeship scheme.

It s early days at the moment, but having a structured foundation course delivered on an academic basis will undoubtedly encourage young people to make fire safety a career choice. We all need a helping hand! When you work in an industry where the answer to any question is it depends , there will always be times when you need the help of a wise old head or even just a second opinion on something. For those with an established network there is always a peer at the end of a phone or email who can be a sounding board. Even those with many years under their belt need to chat through tricky problems. The IFSM Council and, hopefully, senior members of the institute will be available as mentors. Young professionals and student s members can approach the institute and have a mentor assigned to them. They will give you a helping hand or a second opinion, within reason and if they can! Membership has its free privileges!

We will continue to engage with the fire universities in the UK and recruit as many student members as we can. Membership for full-time students is free and Lloyd and Simon are embarking on a virtual and physical tour of universities in the UK to try and sign up new and existing students. They will be starting in September this year, with an aim of lowering the average membership age significantly. Students will enjoy the benefits of IFSM membership and hopefully become lifelong members. This is me! How can employers find and recruit new and talented young professionals? We would like to feature graduates and young professionals in the institute s quarterly magazine, Daedalus, in a series of interviews. The articles will be a broad look at the individual both professionally and personally in an attempt to introduce the person to as wide a community as possible. If you are, or know of, a young professional, please get in touch with us at the foot of this article.

That s New!

200 award for the most original and thought-provoking article. We are looking for an original thinker, someone with a new approach to fire and fire safety, a fresh pair of eyes looking at the sector and sector-specific issues. Tell us about what ideas, theories or strategies you can see working.

We are looking for 250 to 1,000 words on anything fire related We will print the best ones in Daedalus (The Institute s newsletter) and present the award to our winner at our AGM in Manchester on 10 October. This competition is open to members and non-member students and young professionals. See below for contact details.

Top Safety Accreditation for Security Management South West Limited
Local business Security Management South West Limited has been awarded a Worksafe Contractor Membership from Safety Management Advisory Services Ltd (SMAS) for its commitment to achieving excellence in Health and Safety.

Those companies meeting the high standard are included on a database, which is accessible to registered users only via a website.

Client-organisations who sign up to the scheme can access the database, enabling them to vet potential contractors before they even set foot on site. These clients agree that, as users of the scheme, they will engage only those who have received accreditation. Over one hundred and seventy major nation-wide businesses, from several key sectors, have signed up to use the scheme when selecting contractors for services such as building, cleaning, maintenance, refurbishment or electrical and mechanical work.

The pioneer behind the world s first unpickable lock: Abloy celebrates 110th birthday

Security lock pioneer Abloy is celebrating its 110 th birthday. The venerable Finnish brand, which merged with ASSA in 1994, revolutionised the locking industry when it patented the disc cylinder-operated lock in 1919. The innovation was the brainchild of founder Emil Henriksson, who in 1907 decided to redeploy the rotating detainer discs inside cash registers inside locks.

The precision mechanics engineer patented the idea 12 years later and registered the Abloy trademark. Virtually unpickable, the lock propelled Abloy to being a market leader not just in Finland but globally too. Henrickkson later integrated electromechanical technology with the mechanical lock, during the 1960s and 1970s. In 1994, Abloy merged with ASSA to form the ASSA ABLOY group. In recent years Abloy has developed access control systems such as PROTEC2 CLIQ and CLIQ Connect, which reduced the number of keys required. Abloy s product range includes both mechanical and electric locks, as well as access control systems, which are deployed in a wide range of sectors. From museums and sporting venues to hospitals, airports and government buildings, its locks protect some of the world s most iconic landmarks.

Crime data-sharing platform wins six-figure government funding

National Business Crime Solution An initiative for sharing data between the business community and law enforcement agencies has secured significant government funding. Founded by Jason Trigg, the former owner of Cardinal Security, the National Business Crime Solution (NBCS) is a centralised repository for business crime data from which intelligence can be generated to more effectively detect, prevent and respond to crime. The initiative helps stakeholders identify links between crimes committed across a wide geographic area because many criminals travel the length and breadth of the country to commit crime.

The not-for-profit initiative, which in three years has grown its membership by 213% to nearly 50 organisations, has been awarded a six-figure sum from the Police Transformation Fund, a Home Office programme. NBCS management say the money can help them become self-sustaining, make new appointments, attract new members, enhance corporate governance, raise awareness and revamp its branding. With additional resources they will also seek to enhance the quality of information shared and circulated and deliver a fraud-sharing platform. Preventative action This is a unique service from a trusted partner that truly offers the way forward for the industry and police to work together to achieve a common goal, said DCI Georgie Barnard of the National Police Chief s Council, which supports the NBCS. NBCS offers timely information on crime trends to enable businesses in all market sectors to take better preventative action and enable more effective engagement with the police. The NBCS is already credited with the positive identification of 419 suspects and arrest of 309 offenders over the last three years, as well as playing a role in securing sentences of over 200 years for offenders causing the most harm. The NBCS won a Retail Fraud Award in 2014 and an award for Best Collaborative Solution and Best Crime Partnership in 2016. We have proven that by working in collaboration we can build a national profile of business crime and actively support the police service by building watertight cases that result in real action, says Catherine Bowen, policy and stakeholder director at NBCS. The partnership between NBCS and the police service has gone from strength to strength and the money we have received from the Police Transformation Fund rubber stamps our credentials and can be seen as an endorsement of the work we do in better protecting businesses.

BT Redcare and Cougar Monitoring announce midlands roadshow aimed at fire and security installers

installer training Cougar Monitoring and BT Redcare have announced a joint roadshow aimed at fire and security installers in the midlands region. Taking place on 6 October 2017 in Birmingham city centre (venue to be confirmed), the roadshow will feature presentations from both companies, with representatives from each of their technical departments on hand to provide advice, guidance and training. BT Redcare has been in the alarm signalling market for over 30 years, said Eric Roberts, CEO of Cougar Monitoring.

It s tried, tested and the majority of its products are third-party certified. Having met with the new BT Redcare management team recently it s clear that they have a renewed focus and intention to work closer with us and installers. We re delighted to join them to reinforce that message to our installers. John Ware, general manager of BT Redcare, said: I met personally with the senior leaders of Cougar Monitoring recently and it s clear that they, like us, are looking to the future and to expanding their operation. And we re perfectly placed to help them do this. The combination of our expertise in the market and their reach to installers means attendees to the roadshow will get the best advice, value and support from both companies. BT Redcare, which is one of the biggest players in the alarm signalling market, recently revamped its website and pledged to work closer with ARCs and installers to help grow their businesses. Cougar, which was established in 1996, is approved by the Security Industry Authority as an approved contractor for keyholding, security guarding and public space CCTV and has received the NSI s Gold Standard EMS & Health and Safety accreditations. More details on the roadshow will be issued soon but installers can register their interest straightaway.
